Two lanes will remain closed on the M6 today after a serious crash.

The motorway was fully shut off between junction 29 for Preston and junction 28 for Leyland after the collision at around 6pm on Saturday (November 19). National Highways said a car had 'come to rest on its side and caught fire.'

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene. The exact of any injuries has not been confirmed yet.

Accident investigation work took place into the early hours of Sunday morning. Today, two lanes will remain closed on the southbound carriageway for emergency resurfacing work.

A tweet posted by Highways North West said: "Update - The #M6 southbound carriageway between J29 #Preston and J28 #Leyland and is now open, with lanes 2 and 3 ( of 3) closed for emergency resurfacing which will take place this evening, following the earlier serious collision. Please allow extra time for your journey."
